First created by Cartier in 1927, a duette - or double clip brooch was a pin-backed mount for two dress clips. Dress clips had become very popular in the 1920s because of their versatility.

Dress clips were fastened to dresses to enhance a neckline and could be pair worn at right angles of a square neck or on either side of a round one. Clips also decorated jackets, hats, handbags, and shoes.

Created in 1969, Butler & Wilson began selling antique jewellery in the Antiquarius market, Chelsea and has come to define bold, glamorous crystal costume jewellery. British Vogue says that their ability to change with the times and fashion throughout the years has made Butler and Wilson 'Costume royalty' .
