An antique brass candle snuffer and wick trimmer.
Georgian, circa 1790.
Length: 12.8 cm (5")
Until the middle of the 1800s 'snuffer' referred to a scissor-like device with two flat blades. This tool was used to trim the wick of a candle without extinguishing the flame, to maintain efficient burning and the small receptacle caught the trimmed bit of wick.
They have become sought after again today with the popularity of candles - and scented candles - in home decor.
