Charles Horner (1837–1896) was a Halifax-based jeweller, who patented a revolutionary new silver thimble which could be richly decorated so could serve as an engagement gift, but could also be used safely. Thimbles are still used today and have become very collectable. Thimbles are believed to date back to around 7000 B.C., the same time as cloth and the use of a needle: thimble collectors are known as digitabulists.
