Christian Dior (1905-1907) was one of the most celebrated couturiers of the 20th century. In 1947 Dior launched the 'New Look' collection celebrating ultra-femininity and glamour in women's fashion, which appealed to the mood of post-war society. Christian Dior launched his first collection of fashion jewellery to complement his garments in 1948.

In 1955 Christian Dior granted the exclusive license to manufacture his designs to Henkel and Grosse, based in the famous goldsmith town of Pforzheim Germany;  Henkel and Grosse held the license for 50 years, until 2005, when the company was taken over by Dior. The tradition of adding dates to Dior jewellery first began in 1956 and it continued until the 1970s. Henkel and Grosse jewellery was very high quality, made from gold plated and rhodium plated metal.
