In 1885 Tsar Alexander III of Russia commissioned Peter Carl Fabergé to create a jewelled egg as an Easter gift for his wife, Empress Maria Feodorovna; it was such a success that he ordered a new design for the following Easter.  The tradition continued when his son, Nicolas II took the throne and continued until the outbreak of the Russian revolution in 1917 which ended the House of Romanov's 300 year reign.
