Lea Stein Paris 'Sleeping Cat' Brooch, 1990s

Product Information

A Lea Stein Paris Sleeping Cat Brooch - Gold Sparkle.

Dating from the 1990s, the brooch perfectly captures a sleepy cat, curled up with its tail around its body, peeking out with half-closed eyes. This gold sparkle version is quite rare.

Lea Stein drew inspiration from different artistic periods, especially the Art Deco era of the 1920s–30s, reinterpreted through her signature layered celluloid technique.

Her 1990s designs pay homage to these earlier decorative styles while maintaining a whimsical, contemporary character.

The brooch closes with a secure rollover clasp, in perfect working order and is signed Lea Stein Paris on the reverse

Lea Stein, born in Paris in 1936, has been creating her instantly recognisable jewellery since the early 1960s. She pioneered a unique approach to working with celluloid and plastics, developing intricate, multi-layered designs alongside her husband, chemist Fernand Steinberger. By laminating and shaping ultra-thin sheets of celluloid acetate, then baking, cooling, and cutting them - a process that could take months - Lea Stein produces one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted pieces. Her work is instantly recognisable for its bold colours, textures, and inventive patterns, making her creations highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
