A beautifully crafted handmade sterling silver brooch by renowned British silversmith Derek Birch.

The brooch features intricate open-work "stringing" and a textured handle, showcasing Birch’s signature attention to detail. A perfect example of sporting jewellery and an ideal gift for tennis enthusiasts or collectors of 20th-century designer silver.

The brooch is in very good vintage condition with clear hallmarks for London, 1978.

Weighing a substantial 11g, this is a solid, high-quality piece of designer silver that feels balanced and secure when worn.

The brooch has a trombone safety clasp, seen on higher-end jewellery. 

To open and close:  Pull the small cylindrical sleeve (the "trombone") away from the pin head to unlock the mechanism.Move the pin bar in or out of the open catch. Push the sleeve back into place and give it a final push to fully lock the pin for maximum security.

Derek T. Birch (1941–2011) was a British silversmith and lecturer, recognised for his 1970s modernist silver pieces and for teaching at the Birmingham School of Jewellery until 2006. Known for producing high-quality sterling silver, he produced high-quality, modern sterling silver items, including notable pieces from the 1970s featuring distinct textures (e.g., irregular mesh).Note: He is distinct from Derek Birch & Son, a Guernsey-based jeweller.
