Yves Saint Laurent (1936 - 2008) was appointed head of the House of Dior, following Christian Dior’s death. He launched his first collection and runway show under his own name was in 1962, with jewellery featured in his collections from the beginning.
In 1966, Saint Laurent became the first couturier to open a ready-to-wear boutique under his name. In the same year, he introduced his most iconic garment, the tuxedo - 'le smoking' in the Autumn/Winter collection, which he adapted to suit the female body.
