Léa Stein Paris King Penguin Brooch, Early 1990s

Product Information

Add a touch of Parisian whimsy to your collection with this exquisite King Penguin brooch by the celebrated French designer Léa Stein.

Dating from the 1990s, in rare Fantasy colourway, this piece is a standout example of Stein's artistry.

The penguin features a radiant, sparkly crimson body paired with a classic cream chest and a contrasting purple inlay bib, giving the penguin its iconic smart appearance. The design is perfectly finished with a black head, cream eye, bold magenta-pink beak and stylised copper coloured feet feet.

Léa Stein drew inspiration from different artistic periods, especially the Art Deco era of the 1920s–30s, reinterpreted through her signature layered celluloid technique.

Her 1990s designs pay homage to these earlier decorative styles while maintaining a whimsical, contemporary character.

This piece features the signature V-shaped safety clasp, in perfect working order, and is signed  "LÉA STEIN PARIS" on the reverse.

In very good condition commensurate with its age.

    Dimensions: 9 cm  x 4.5 cm | 3.5 inches x 1.75 inches approx.

    Material: Celluloid Acetate

A statement piece full of personality, perfect for collectors, Lea Stein enthusiasts or penguin lovers.

    Why This Piece is Special

While many Léa Stein designs use colours that vaguely mimic nature, a "Fantasy" colourway deliberately uses unnatural, vibrant, and whimsical combinations. This piece incorporates special finishes like the shimmering, lamé-style texture within the crimson layers - which are far more rare and sought after by collectors than standard, solid-coloured versions.

Léa Stein, born in Paris in 1936, has been creating her instantly recognisable jewellery since the early 1960s. She pioneered a unique approach to working with celluloid and plastics, developing intricate, multi-layered designs alongside her husband, chemist Fernand Steinberger. By laminating and shaping ultra-thin sheets of celluloid acetate, then baking, cooling, and cutting them - a process that could take months - Lea Stein produces one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted pieces. Her work is instantly recognisable for its bold colours, textures, and inventive patterns, making her creations highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
