Vintage Butler & Wilson Penguin and Baby Brooch, 1980s, Book Piece

Product Information

Own a piece of fashion history with this charming vintage Butler & Wilson brooch dating from the 1980s, featuring mother and baby Art Deco-inspired penguins.

The design combines glossy black enamel with brilliant pavé-set clear crystals and polished silver-tone settings. The penguins have wonderfully playful character, while the scale makes this a fabulous statement brooch.

This is a documented Butler & Wilson book piece, featured in Vivienne Becker’s Rough Diamonds: The Butler & Wilson Collection, published in 1990, on page 104.

The reverse is stamped with the early B&W signature and bears the Sphinx design code 20810. The brooch was produced for Butler & Wilson by the prestigious British jewellery manufacturer Sphinx.

Dimensions: 6.5cm x 7cm | 2.5 x 2.75 inches

In very good vintage condition. The crystals are complete with none missing, although some have developed a slight yellow undertone with age, most noticeable on the bow. The enamel is in excellent condition with no loss or chipping. The rollover clasp is secure and fully functioning.

Supplied in black 1980s era Butler & Wilson box.

About Sphinx

Founded in 1948 in Chiswick, London, Sphinx was the premier British manufacturer of high-end costume jewellery, renowned for pieces that possessed the weight, detail, and "feel" of fine jewelry. During their golden era in the 1960s, 70s and 80s, their craftsmanship was so highly regarded that they were commissioned to produce "bijoux de couture" for legendary designers such as Kenneth Jay Lane (KJL), Butler & Wilson and Nina Ricci, as well as exclusive collections for luxury department stores like Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus.

Today, signed Sphinx pieces - often identified by an oval name stamp and a unique catalogue number - are highly collectible.
