Vintage Butler & Wilson Crystal Monkey Brooch with Pearl

Product Information

A stunning vintage Butler & Wilson monkey brooch.

This whimsical piece features a gunmetal-tone monkey with dramatic elongated tail, black crystal eyes and a body entirely encrusted with shimmering Aurora Borealis crystal rhinestones, holding a lustrous pearl.

A charming example of Butler & Wilson's signature figural jewellery, and very much in the spirit of the late Victorians' passion for whimsical animal pieces. The monkey was a particular favourite: exotic creatures spoke to a fascination with the wider world at a time when travel and natural history were all the rage, and monkeys carried a sense of playfulness and mischief that the Victorian sense of humour found irresistible.

Provenance: acquired from a private collector active during the 1980s and early 1990s
